Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays

So the holiday season is upon us. With Thanksgiving right around the corner and Christmas and New Year’s soon after now is the time to start planning our meal plan. One thing to consider when we are doing our holiday snacking is to include plenty of alternative healthy choices.  Another way to ensure that we don’t pack on the pounds during this season is to make sure that we drink plenty of clean refreshing water.  Water is essential to weight loss and diet and can keep us on track during the holidays. Our bodies are made up of 60-70% water and it is essential for survival. So here are some of the reasons for drinking plenty of water while keeping our figures as we snack our way to the New Year.

1.      Drinking a full glass of water before eating makes you feel fuller. Water will make you feel       fuller than eating on an empty stomach therefore we are less likely to over indulge.

2.      The brain has no distinction between hunger and thirst so when you feel like you are hungry your body may just be saying that you are thirsty.

3.      Water assists in digestion of food making it easier for your body to absorb the nutrients from the foods that you eat.

4.      Water intake reduces water retention. Your body will hold on to what water it has if it is not adequately hydrated. Drinking more water helps the body to let go of the excess water that it does not need.

5.      When our body is properly hydrated it runs at its optimized target making it easier to get rid of unwanted fat.

So while enjoying all the wonderful foods that come your way during the holidays, remember to moderate your intake, choose some healthier alternatives and drink plenty of fresh, clean filtered water.

Just Drink

Dehydration is the loss of fluids that are needed in order to keep our bodies working at full capacity. We can lose water in our daily functions such as exercise and sweating, from illnesses that cause vomiting and diarrhea and from simply not replenishing enough fluids. Drinking water is just as important as breathing when it comes to keeping our bodies alive and our brains functioning.

The human body is made up mostly of water. Our blood is made up of 82% water, lungs are 90% while the brain is an amazing 95%.  It is no wonder that even a 2% drop in our body’s water supply can cause signs of dehydration. Signs of mild dehydration include headache, fuzzy thinking, loss of appetite, dry mouth and chills. At a 5% loss of water our symptoms of dehydration increase and get more dangerous. They include muscle cramps, nausea, extreme fatigue, tingling of the limbs, increased heart rate, respiration and body temperature with a decrease in sweating and urination. Left untreated and our body begins to shut down. Severe dehydration symptoms include racing pulse, confusion, poor vision, muscle spasms, painful urination, vomiting, chest and stomach pain, difficulty breathing, seizers and eventually unconsciousness. Drinking water can eliminate dehydration and restore the body back to its original state. Staying properly hydrated can help keep our minds sharp and our bodies energized. The good news is that water in America is an easily available source that comes straight into our kitchens. Using a water filter ensures that the water that you are consuming is clean and free of bacteria.  By having an accessible source of filtered water that taste good it is easy to drink plenty of fluids making keeping our bodies hydrated as simple as breathing.

Drink Responsibly

With the upcoming election coming to a close the issue of the world’s economy and our lengthy visit to the Middle East are not the only issues that are at the forefront of our politician’s positions.  Global warming and the environmental issues are also things to consider before going into the voting polls this November. We now have a better understanding of the environmental impact that we have on our planet and on our natural resources. As we look at alternative resources for our growing demand on mother earth we can start by taking some simple steps at home that can have a major impact on the life of our planet. One of these ways is by avoiding purchasing bottled water. Bottled water requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce and creates up to 1.5 million tons of plastic, 80% which are not recycled and end up in our world’s ocean. Add to that the landfills that are overflowing with slowly decaying plastic bottles that can take up to 450 years to decompose if not indefinitely. A cost effective and better tasting solution to this growing problem is to purchase a water filter that can easily fit on your counter top and supply you with a never ending supply of fresh, clean water. I have also found that you can purchase a glass or Aluminum water container at your local grocery store and refill it as often as you like with filtered water that is healthier and cleaner than both tap water and bottled water. Using a glass container is also healthier than drinking from a plastic container and can be put in the dishwasher for multiple uses. So if you want to help the environment and have a healthier, cleaner and safer alternative to plastic containers you can start at home and drink responsibly.

The Bottled Water Myth

I have been drinking water from a filter for the past two years and find that not only is it a healthier alternative to drinking from a public water source and better for our environment it is also better tasting.  Since I consider myself to be an environmentally and health conscious person I have done a lot of research on the advantages of drinking water from a filter rather than from a bottle or the sink.  I have included a list of some of the benefits of drinking water from a filter on our bodies and our environment.

1.    Water filters remove dangerous contaminates preventing harmful substances from entering our bodies.

2.    Purchasing water filters is more cost effective then repeatedly buying bottled water.

3.    Filtered water is a clean and healthy way to hydrate the body and is just as convenient as tap water.

4.    Water filters are environmentally friendly and do not add to the over population of waste that goes into our landfills each year.

5.    Some bottled water is nothing more than tap water that is marketed as a clean source of filtered water.

6.    Drinking water has been proven to have multiple health benefits such as clearer skin, releasing toxins and weight loss.

7.    It takes three times the amount of water to make a plastic bottle then it does to fill it.

8.    Installing a whole house water filter will ensure that all the water than comes to your house is filtered and  can be used for drinking, cooking, washing clothes, bathing and many other purposes.

9.    Because filtered water taste better and smells better you will be more inclined to drink the required amount of water each day.

10. By removing chlorine and chlorine byproducts from drinking water filters greatly reduce the risk of rectal cancer, colon cancer, and bladder cancer.
